U.S. Congresswoman Sara Jacobs sharply rebuked President Donald Trump’s warning of potential military action against Nigeria over alleged Christian genocide, calling it “reckless” and unconstitutional during a tense congressional hearing on the country’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC).

Jacobs, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Africa, delivered her critique on Thursday amid discussions of Trump’s recent CPC designation, which cites widespread persecution and genocide against Christians in Nigeria. The move prompted Trump to publicly state that he had directed the Defense Department to prepare for possible intervention if the Nigerian government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
“Pinning Nigeria’s violence solely on religious conflict fails to capture the full picture,” Jacobs asserted, emphasizing that the turmoil impacts communities across religious lines. “The violence affecting both Christian and Muslim communities is real, and the Nigerian government can and should do more to address it.”
In her remarks, Jacobs expressed appreciation for the hearing chairman’s longstanding advocacy on Nigeria but cautioned against oversimplifying the crisis. Having worked on counter-Boko Haram strategies at the State Department since 2013, she highlighted recent horrors: the killing of two people and the kidnapping of a pastor and a worshipper at a church in Kware State, followed days later by criminal bandits abducting 25 girls all Muslims in Kebbi State.
“It is counterproductive to adopt oversimplistic narratives about the multiple, complex, overlapping security challenges and violence across the country,” Jacobs said. She warned that “false narratives perpetuate harmful stereotypes and motivate tensions and violence based on religious identity.” Such distortions, she argued, “erase the real drivers of violence and make it harder to implement effective solutions,” potentially fueling attacks on the very groups the administration aims to safeguard.

Jacobs voiced particular alarm over Trump’s inflammatory language, including threats to enter Nigeria “guns a-blazing” to eliminate terrorists. “We are already receiving reports of increased tensions between Christian and Muslim populations following this rhetoric,” she noted. “President Trump’s threat is reckless, and any unilateral military action in Nigeria would be illegal. Congress has not authorized force in Nigeria to protect Christians, and any action without Nigeria’s consent violates international law.”
She further dismissed a military-first approach as futile, stating, “We also know that a military-first response won’t actually address the violence and will do very little to protect Christian communities.”
