The Edo State Government has ordered the closure of three public secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following security intelligence on an alleged plot by suspected bandits to abduct schoolchildren in the area.

The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.

The closure was announced by the Ministry of Education in a directive signed by the Permanent Secretary, Enodolomwanyi Otamere.

According to the government, the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect students, teachers and surrounding communities while security agencies assess and respond to the reported threat.

The development followed intelligence reports from security agencies indicating that criminal elements may be planning attacks on schools in Akoko-Edo, particularly in Edo North Senatorial District.

Security sources said the Department of State Services, DSS, had earlier raised an alert over an alleged plan by suspected bandits to kidnap schoolchildren in Edo North after previous attempts to abduct wealthy individuals reportedly failed to yield the expected financial gains.

According to the intelligence, intercepted communications allegedly suggested that the suspects considered schoolchildren more attractive targets because such incidents could attract greater government attention and possibly lead to higher ransom payments or concessions.

Concerns were heightened after security operatives arrested a 25-year-old man who was allegedly perceived to be carrying out surveillance around Makeke Secondary School on June 4.

Authorities believe the incident may indicate that preparations for a possible attack had already begun.

Following the alert, security agencies advised the state government to strengthen protection around schools and other public institutions in vulnerable communities.

Recommended measures include increased deployment of security personnel, enhanced intelligence gathering, joint operations with local vigilantes and hunters, and intensified patrols across affected areas.

The Ministry of Education said the suspension of activities in the three schools would remain in force until further notice.

The directive affects both academic and administrative activities in the affected schools.

However, students currently writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, will be allowed to continue their papers under special security arrangements put in place by relevant authorities and community leaders.

School administrators have been directed to ensure the safe return of students to their parents and guardians, secure the school premises, and maintain close communication with security agencies.

The state government appealed to residents, parents and school authorities to remain calm but vigilant.

It assured the public that security agencies were working to address the threat and ensure that normal school activities resume as soon as conditions are considered safe.
