The West African Examinations Council has warned school officials, supervisors and invigilators against extorting candidates and parents during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on Monday by WAEC’s Public Affairs Department and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina.

The Council said it had received reports that some supervisors and schools were demanding illegal payments from candidates and parents under different pretexts, including charges for transportation of scripts, welfare packages and unauthorised “cooperation” fees.

WAEC also disclosed that it had identified cases where some schools charged candidates for KAPEK calculators already provided free by the Council.

The examination body condemned the alleged practices, describing them as illegal, unethical and a direct threat to the integrity of the WASSCE.

According to WAEC, all school proprietors, principals, supervisors and invigilators must immediately stop all forms of unauthorised collection of money from candidates or parents.

The Council stated that no collection of money from candidates or parents for any examination official would be tolerated.

It also urged candidates, parents and other stakeholders to report any attempt at extortion to zonal coordinators or through designated official communication channels.

WAEC further warned against intimidation or harassment of candidates, adding that any school or official found culpable would face sanctions.

The sanctions, according to the Council, may include derecognition, blacklisting, prosecution and referral to relevant authorities for disciplinary action.

Reaffirming its commitment to examination integrity, WAEC said it remained focused on safeguarding the credibility of its assessments and protecting candidates.

The Council added that it was committed to ensuring the smooth conduct of the ongoing examination despite recent challenges.

WAEC had earlier said the 2026 WASSCE experienced operational challenges, including delays in some papers due to logistics issues and a fatal accident involving some of its officials.

The 2026 May/June WASSCE for school candidates, which began on April 21, is scheduled to end on June 19, 2026.
