For Afam Okeke, the relaunch of the Nigerian Bar Association Digital Stamp and Seal is more than a technological upgrade. It is a practical example of what the Bar can achieve when it embraces innovation to make legal practice easier, faster and more accessible for lawyers across the country.

Speaking in the first edition of The Accessible Secretariat Series, Okeke said the Digital Seal initiative demonstrates that the NBA can modernise its operations in a way that directly improves the daily experience of legal practitioners.

According to him, the future of the Bar lies in building systems that remove unnecessary barriers and enable lawyers to access services with speed, ease and confidence.

He noted that legal practice has evolved significantly, with e-filing, virtual hearings, digital transactions and cross-border legal services becoming increasingly common. In such an environment, he said, the systems supporting lawyers must also evolve.

Okeke stated that the relaunch of the Digital Seal shows that the NBA is capable of adapting to changing realities and positioning itself for the future.

He stressed that an accessible Secretariat must also be a digitally responsive Secretariat, adding that lawyers should be able to engage with the Association through systems that are efficient, transparent, secure and accessible, regardless of where they practise.

According to him, technology should be used to simplify practice, reduce administrative bottlenecks, strengthen communication, improve service delivery and ensure that every branch enjoys equal access to NBA services and opportunities.

“Technology should simplify practice, not complicate it. The goal is a digitally responsive Secretariat that cuts friction, enhances communication, improves service delivery, and expands access for lawyers in every branch,” he said.

As he consults for the office of General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Okeke pledged to build on reforms such as the Digital Seal initiative by supporting further digitisation of NBA processes and strengthening systems that make the Association more responsive to members.

He further emphasised that a responsive Secretariat must leverage technology to ensure that distance is never a barrier to participation, engagement or access.

According to him, whether a lawyer practises in Abuja, Lagos, Uyo, Maiduguri, Yenagoa, Ibadan or any other part of Nigeria, access to NBA services should be seamless, reliable and efficient.

For Okeke, the Digital Seal initiative represents the kind of forward-looking reform the Bar must continue to pursue; reforms that strengthen professional integrity while making legal practice more practical, modern and accessible for all lawyers.
