Human rights lawyer, Festus Ogun, has threatened to sue the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, over its continued posting of corps members to states outside their places of residence despite the worsening insecurity across the country.

Ogun, Senior Partner at FO Legal, said the practice exposes young Nigerians to avoidable danger and may amount to a violation of their constitutional right to life.

In a post on his Facebook page, the lawyer argued that deploying corps members to unfamiliar and insecure states, particularly through dangerous transit corridors, is tantamount to signing their death warrants while they are still alive.

According to him, the policy is unconstitutional in view of the current security situation in the country.

“It is unconstitutional for NYSC to continue dispatching young people on a journey of no return. It potentially violates the right to life guaranteed under Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution,” he said.

Ogun said many corps members and prospective corps members have become targets of kidnappers and bandits while travelling to or serving in states far from their homes.

He cited recent cases of abducted corps members and prospective corps members, including Eunice Ameh in Abuja, Abba Musa Usman in Zamfara and Lateefah Binuyo in Kogi State.

Binuyo, a Lagos resident and prospective corps member, was reportedly abducted along the Kogi axis while travelling to her orientation camp in Taraba State. She regained her freedom after spending 10 days in captivity.

Usman was abducted by suspected bandits on January 9 while travelling from Gusau in Zamfara State to Sokoto State. He was reportedly intercepted at Gidan Kano, a village in the Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, and regained freedom in April after about three months in captivity.

Ogun said the repeated attacks show that the NYSC scheme, as currently operated, has become unsafe for young Nigerians.

“With the spate of insecurity in every corner of Nigeria, posting corpers to states, other than their states of residence, is tantamount to signing their death warrants while still alive,” he said.

The lawyer said he may approach a court of competent jurisdiction in the coming weeks to challenge what he described as a continuous violation of human rights.

He added that he would compile cases of deaths and abductions involving corps members linked to insecurity across the country.

“In the coming weeks, I may be compelled to approach a court of competent jurisdiction to challenge this continuous violation of human rights.

“I will chronicle the number of corpers’ deaths and abductions experienced owing to insecurity in this country,” he stated.

Ogun called for the suspension of the NYSC scheme until the country becomes safe, insisting that the killings and abductions of corps members are avoidable.

“The killings are avoidable and the NYSC programme must stop altogether till the country is safe,” he said.

He stressed that his planned legal action was not personal, noting that he had also served Nigeria under the NYSC scheme years ago.

According to him, his concern is about the future of young Nigerians and the sanctity of human life.

“Now, the suit is not just about me. I have served this country in khaki some years ago. My fight for corpers is more about the future of this country and the sanctity of human life,” he added.
