The Abuja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (Unity Bar) has uncovered what seems to be what transpired that led to the arrest of two young lawyers, Benson Aigbojie and Maduabuchi Idam, and their subsequent detention at Kabusa Station.

In a press release signed by the Secretary of the branch, Chidi Ezenwafor, it was revealed that the duo have been accused of heading a fraud syndicate of about twenty persons to defraud a company to the tune of N52,000,000.00. According to the statement, this was discovered after arriving the station for findings.

”Following the news making rounds today of the supposed harassment and brutality of two of our colleagues, Messrs. Benson Aigbojie and Maduabuchi Idam, myself and Mr. Emmanuel Adedeji, the Assistant Secretary of the NBA Abuja Branch (Unity Bar) visited the Kabusa Station of the Nigerian Police where the alleged brutality took place to verify the information and take up the matter if true. However upon arriving at the station, we met with the DPO, CSP Onoh Charles who explained what transpired to us.

”From the interaction with the DPO, the following facts emerged: A company account was hacked into and the company defrauded to the tune of N52, 000, 000. 00. The matter was reported to the AIG Zone 2 Lagos who tracked and geolocated one of the suspects at Kabusa village Abuja. Operatives were then detailed from Lagos to apprehend the suspect here in Abuja.

”Upon arrival, they proceeded to the office of the Commisioner of Police FCT to book their presence after which the CP by a signal which was shown to us, directed the DPO Kabusa to provide them necessary assistance in their investigation. After two days of surveillance, the suspect was apprehended yesterday, the 2nd of August, 2019, and upon interrogation, alleged that Mr Benson Aigbojie was the head of a fraud syndicate of about 20 persons.”

It was added that it was based on the said information, the suspect was asked to call Mr Benson Aigbojie and inform him that he was being detained at the police station for a minor traffic incidence.

It was further alleged that upon being informed, Mr Benson Aigbojie proceeded to the station to secure the release of the said suspect, but upon arrival was confronted with the petition from Lagos and the suspects statement under caution implicating him, and that it was at that point that he refused and resisted arrest but was eventually arrested and is right now entroute to AIG zone 2 Lagos where the petition was lodged and is being investigated.

TheNigerialawyer (TNL) recalls that two young lawyers, Benson Aigbojie and one Maduabuchi Idam, were reportedly tortured at Abuja Police station for demanding a client’s bail. However, following the statement issued, there is now a change in the narrative.
