The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has warned tertiary institutions against issuing their own admission letters to candidates, insisting that only admissions processed and accepted through its Central Admissions Processing System are officially recognised for admission-related purposes, including mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps.

JAMB said universities, polytechnics and colleges of education do not have the statutory authority to issue official admission letters independently of the Board’s admission process, warning that candidates who accept offers outside CAPS could encounter difficulties when such documents are required for official purposes.

The warning was issued by JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.

Aina said the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that all admissions into tertiary institutions must be processed through CAPS, maintaining that admissions conducted outside the platform are illegal and invalid.

According to him, JAMB remains the body statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.

He expressed concern that some candidates assume admission letters issued directly by institutions are sufficient simply because such documents carry the names, logos or other identifying features of the universities concerned.

Aina therefore urged institutions engaging in the practice to stop and ensure that all candidates admitted into their programmes complete the appropriate process through CAPS and obtain their official admission letters from JAMB.

He stressed that an institution’s internal admission notification cannot replace the official admission letter generated by JAMB after a candidate has been properly admitted and accepted the offer on CAPS.

The clarification is particularly relevant to prospective corps members because evidence of properly processed admission forms part of the documentation used in determining eligibility for NYSC mobilisation.

JAMB’s position means that candidates admitted outside CAPS, or those relying solely on admission letters issued directly by their institutions without corresponding JAMB admission records, could face difficulties when seeking recognition of such admission for NYSC mobilisation and other official purposes.

The Board consequently advised candidates to confirm that their admissions are reflected on CAPS and to obtain the appropriate JAMB admission letter rather than relying solely on documents produced by their institutions.

The warning also places responsibility on tertiary institutions to ensure that admission offers granted to candidates are properly uploaded, processed and regularised through the central admission platform before candidates proceed with other academic and official requirements.
