Senior Advocate of Nigeria, James Onoja, has warned against what he described as false and misleading narratives concerning a $2.1 million civil suit instituted against Jordan Nyesom Wike by Safwan Garba over an Abuja land transaction.

Onoja, who is lead counsel to Jordan Wike, said persons who continue to publish what he described as false accounts of the court proceedings could expose themselves to civil and criminal proceedings, including actions arising from malicious falsehood, cyberbullying, slander and libel.

His reaction followed an interview granted by Ibrahim Wuru, counsel to Garba, in which statements were made suggesting that Jordan Wike had admitted receiving the disputed $2.1 million from the plaintiff.

Onoja rejected that interpretation of the proceedings and maintained that his client had never admitted receiving any money from Garba.

According to the senior lawyer, no statement or process filed before the court by Jordan Wike amounted to an admission that he personally received the $2.1 million at the centre of the dispute.

He therefore cautioned against presenting allegations made by one party in the pending civil action as established facts or as admissions made by his client.

Onoja stressed that the issues surrounding the disputed land transaction remain before the court and should be determined on the basis of the pleadings, evidence and submissions of the parties.

He maintained that media commentary on the case should accurately reflect what transpired in court and avoid attributing statements or admissions to his client which, according to him, were never made.

The $2.1 million dispute arose from a civil action instituted by Garba in connection with an Abuja land transaction involving Jordan Wike.

While the plaintiff has made claims concerning the money and the transaction, Jordan Wike’s legal team has disputed aspects of that account and insists that its client did not admit receiving the disputed sum.

The substantive issues in the suit remain pending before the court and have not been finally determined.
