The Federal Government has proposed a coordinated timetable for the 2027 external examinations, placing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination between March 15 and 25 and targeting August for the release of results from four other examination bodies.

The arrangement is intended to reduce examination clashes, improve coordination and enable eligible candidates to begin tertiary admission processes by September 2027.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board shared the proposed schedule on its social media platforms on Thursday, October 22, stressing that the dates were proposed timelines rather than confirmed final examination dates.

“The Federal Government is working with examination bodies to align the 2027 examination timetable and ensure the timely release of results, enabling eligible candidates to begin tertiary admission processes by September 2027,” JAMB stated.

Under the proposal, the UTME would take place from March 15 to 25, 2027, with results expected within the same month.

The National Examinations Council’s Senior School Certificate Examination is proposed for April 1 to May 14, while the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, conducted by the West African Examinations Council, would run from May 11 to June 18.

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board’s examination is proposed for June 1 to July 5, followed by the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies’ examination from June 10 to July 9.

Results from NECO, WAEC, NABTEB and NBAIS are targeted for release in August 2027, ahead of the planned commencement of tertiary admission processes in September.

The Federal Ministry of Education had earlier outlined the same proposed calendar in an announcement dated October 14, which was subsequently updated on October 20.

According to the ministry, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, convened a meeting with heads and representatives of the examination bodies at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja to advance coordination of the schedules.

The ministry placed the initiative within the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, explaining that continued engagement with the examination bodies would focus on accountability, timely results and alignment with tertiary admissions. JAMB identified the objectives as minimising examination timetable clashes, improving coordination among the examination bodies, ensuring timely processing and release of results, and allowing eligible candidates to commence admission processes by September.

The proposed examination windows overlap in some instances. NECO and WAEC, for example, would both be conducting examinations between May 11 and 14. However, overlapping examination periods do not necessarily mean that individual subject papers will clash; that will depend on the detailed timetables eventually issued.

Candidates have therefore been advised to follow official announcements from the respective examination bodies and await confirmation of the final dates.
