Indications have emerged that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, may step down from her position, but only if it happens during a plenary session.

This development follows the House’s indefinite adjournment on February 17, after 36 out of 40 lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in Meranda’s leadership. It was earlier resolved, following the intervention of key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), that Meranda would resign to allow Lagos West to produce the next Speaker.

Multiple sources confirmed that while Meranda has agreed to resign, the process must follow legislative procedures and take place during plenary. “She cannot just resign without due process. It has to be during plenary, and until the House reconvenes, the status quo remains,” a source stated.

Additionally, there are speculations that Meranda may return to her former position as Deputy Speaker. Meanwhile, top APC leaders, including former National Chairman Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and NNPC Board Chairman Pius Akinyelure, have stepped in to mediate and restore peace in the House.

Amidst this crisis, the legal team of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has confirmed that there are no plans to withdraw the suit challenging his removal from office.

Obasa, who was ousted on January 13 while on a trip to the United States, maintains that his removal was illegal. Upon his return on January 25, he insisted, “I strongly believe I am still the Speaker until the right thing is done. If you want to remove me, do it the proper way, and I will not contest it.”

His lead counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), stated that the court hearing is set for February 28, and there is no indication that Obasa will return to the Assembly before obtaining a legal judgment. “It would be illegal for him to return before the matter is decided in court,” Fashanu said.

Despite efforts by APC leaders to broker peace, sources indicate that the mediating panel has recommended that both Obasa and Meranda step down to allow another lawmaker from Lagos West to take over the Speakership. It was also suggested that Obasa withdraw his suit against the Assembly.

In a related development, the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the detention of three Lagos Assembly workers— Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Adetu Adekunle, and Fatimoh Adetola—by the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly assaulting DSS officers.

The incident reportedly occurred on February 17 during an altercation between Assembly workers and security operatives. The DSS accused the defendants of obstructing officers on duty and cyberstalking by spreading false information online to incite public unrest.

Justice Daniel Osiagor ruled that the defendants be held in custody pending their arraignment, citing the need for a thorough review of the case.

In response, the Lagos chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has condemned the detention, calling it an “abuse of power and gross violation of rights.” PASAN Chairman Babatunde Ogunlana demanded their immediate release and urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene.

“The continued detention of our members raises genuine concerns for their health and safety, one of whom is asthmatic,” PASAN said in a statement.

As tensions continue, political observers are closely watching the next move of the Lagos State House of Assembly. With Lagos West set to produce the next Speaker, eight lawmakers have been shortlisted for the position, including Setonji David (Badagry Constituency 2), Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaye 1), Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 1), Adedamola Kasunmu (Ikeja 2), Lukman Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1), Wale Rauf Sulaimon (Mushin 2), Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 1), and Surajudeen Tijani (Ojo 2).
