The Management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has assured staff, students, parents and visitors of their safety following the circulation of a social media post alleging an impending terrorist attack and mass abduction on the Nsukka campus.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the university, Inya Agha Egwu, the institution said there was no credible security intelligence or verified threat to support the claims contained in the online post.

The university described the information as unsubstantiated and urged members of the public not to treat it as factual.

Despite dismissing the alleged threat, the management said it had taken additional precautionary measures to strengthen security within and around the campus.

According to the statement, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army have been deployed to key entry points to support the university’s internal security unit.

The management also announced the temporary closure of some access gates to the Nsukka campus to enhance monitoring and control of movement in and out of the institution.

It further suspended motorcycle operations within the campus with immediate effect.

The university said motorcycles would no longer be allowed beyond the gates, except those belonging to authorised security personnel. Staff members who commute on motorcycles were advised to park them at designated locations outside the campus before proceeding to their offices.

The management urged members of the university community to remain calm and continue their normal activities without fear.

It also appealed to parents, guardians, students, staff and the general public to avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing panic, anxiety or disruption.

While reiterating that there is no known threat to the institution, the university advised students and staff to remain vigilant and security-conscious.

It encouraged members of the community to promptly report any suspicious person, movement or activity to the university security department or the nearest security agency.

The management stressed that security remains a collective responsibility and called for the cooperation of all stakeholders in sustaining a peaceful and secure campus environment.

It also cautioned against relying on anonymous social media posts and unverified online messages, especially those containing sensational claims capable of creating fear and uncertainty.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe, secure and conducive environment for teaching, learning and other academic activities.
