The Chairperson of Epe Local Government Area in Lagos State, Hon. Surah Animashaun, has ordered the suspension of the installation process for a new Olu of Epe following a dispute between two contenders for the traditional stool.

In an official letter addressed to the Grand Chief Imam of the community on Tuesday, Animashaun also suspended all Eid al-Adha celebrations and Jumat prayers scheduled to hold at the Epe Central Mosque and the Eid Ground at Oke Balogun.

The LG boss explained that the measures became necessary to prevent potential unrest and security threats resulting from the rivalry between the two self-proclaimed successors, Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji.

“Sequel to the dual installation of the new Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom on June 2, 2025, which is legally null and void following the recent passing of the immediate Olu-Epe, Oba Shefiu Adewale, I am writing to inform your office that High Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and High Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji, both parading themselves as the newly installed Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom, are hereby suspended till further hearing from the authorities,” Animashaun stated.

She cited “unforeseen circumstances, security concerns, and public health issues” as reasons for the temporary suspension of the Eid and Jumat observances in the area.

Further announcements, she added, would be made in due course.

The development follows the death of the 86-year-old monarch, Oba Shefiu Adewale, who passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025. His death was confirmed by High Chief Musiliu Adeniyi, the Odedeogboro Balogun of Epe Kingdom, who noted that the late king was buried later that same day.

Before his coronation, Oba Adewale rose through the chieftaincy ranks, serving as Otun-Balogun, then Balogun, before ascending the throne as Olu of Epe.
