A fresh political exchange has erupted on social media after presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala claimed that Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, replaced some of his former political associates with social media content creators ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bwala made the assertion in a post on X on Thursday, August 20, while commenting on developments surrounding Obi and those currently associated with his political movement.

The presidential spokesman specifically mentioned Kenneth Okonkwo, Valentine Ozigbo and Balami among individuals he said had left Obi’s camp, describing them as “marginally reasonable” before alleging that the former Anambra State governor subsequently surrounded himself with social media personalities.

“When marginally reasonable people like Ken Okonkwo, Balami, Valentine Ozigbo etc left him, he replaced them with social media content creators and surrounded himself with them. Now he seems to be embarrassed by their shenanigans,” Bwala wrote.

The comment quickly attracted reactions from users on X, with respondents divided between criticism of Bwala, defence of Obi and questions about the role of social media personalities in contemporary political campaigns.

One user, posting under the name Bøbběě, turned Bwala’s criticism back on the presidential spokesman, asking: “Who creates content pass Daniel Bwala.”

The response appeared to question whether Bwala himself, given his frequent political commentary and social media engagements, could fairly criticise others for relying on content creators.

Another user, Maazimuthal Chimezie, suggested that the departure of some of the politicians named by Bwala did not necessarily weaken Obi’s political movement.

“They left maybe cos they are part of the problem ..common man will survive !!” the user wrote.

Another respondent, identified as Prince Ironsi, criticised Bwala directly and argued that participation in the 2027 election should not be framed as a contest between established politicians and younger social media-driven supporters.

“This election is for both the old and the young,” he wrote.

He went further to criticise the Federal Government over insecurity and displacement, claiming that Nigerians living in internally displaced persons’ camps would vote against the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“Those in IDP camps will vote APC out massively. Keeping Nigerians in IDPs is proof of government failure,” he added.

Another account, BeyondAnalysis, reacted to Bwala’s post by asking, “When are you clearing this air,” accompanied by a laughing emoji, while another user, Agujiegbe, responded: “Hmmm ?!! Fantabulous…!!!”

The reactions reflected the increasingly personalised nature of political exchanges ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly on social media, where party officials, government spokesmen, supporters and content creators have become central participants in campaign messaging.

Bwala’s assertion also reopened questions about the composition of Obi’s political circle following the departure or political realignment of some figures previously associated with him.

Kenneth Okonkwo, an actor and lawyer who was prominently involved in Obi’s earlier political movement, later distanced himself from the former Anambra governor’s political camp.

Valentine Ozigbo, a businessman and former governorship candidate in Anambra State, was also previously associated with Obi’s political movement before subsequent political developments altered that relationship.

Bwala’s argument was that the departure of such figures left Obi increasingly dependent on social media personalities whose conduct, in his view, had now become embarrassing to the presidential candidate.

However, the responses to his post showed that some users rejected the suggestion that content creators or younger digital voices should be regarded as politically inferior to traditional politicians.

Others questioned Bwala’s standing to make such criticism, pointing to his own prominent presence on social media and his regular use of online platforms to defend the Presidency and attack political opponents.

The exchanges come as political activity intensifies following the formal commencement of campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.

Obi is contesting the presidential election on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, while President Bola Tinubu is seeking another term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Bwala’s comments represent his own political assessment of Obi’s associates and should not be treated as an established account of how Obi selected or replaced members of his political team.
