Retired Hon. Justice Hadiza Hamisu Ali-Jos has received a brand-new Toyota Corolla, courtesy of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, following a report that the retired jurist faced transportation challenges. The vehicle was formally handed over to her by the Chief Judge of Borno State, Hon. Justice Kashim Zannah, on October 27, 2025, at her residence in Abuja.

Governor Zulum described it as “intolerable and unacceptable” for a jurist of Justice Ali-Jos’ calibre who served with honesty and integrity to face such difficulties in retirement. The Chief Judge delivered the Governor’s response personally to the retired judge.

Justice Ali-Jos is widely celebrated for her incorruptibility. During her tenure as Chairman of an Election Petitions Tribunal, she famously rejected a bribe of $193,700, later returning the money to the government and delivering a judgment against the offenders.

Born on October 2, 1955, in Borno State to Alhaji Baba Jimeta, a former Commissioner of Police, and Hajiya Jummai, Justice Ali-Jos holds an LLB with honours and a Diploma in Law from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and attended the Nigeria Law School in Lagos. She began her career as a legal trainee at the Ministry of Justice, Maiduguri, in 1983 and rapidly ascended through the judiciary, holding roles including Senior Legal Draftsman, Magistrate, Chief Magistrate, and ultimately Deputy and Chief Registrar at the Shari’a Court of Appeal in Jos.

She made history as the first female Chief Registrar of the Shari’a Court of Appeal and later served as a High Court Judge from May 2012 until her retirement on October 2, 2020. Justice Ali-Jos has also served on numerous election petition tribunals across Nigeria, chairing the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Katsina State in 2019.

Her legacy extends beyond the courtroom. She is a staunch advocate for women’s rights, girls’ education, and empowerment, often participating in workshops and initiatives organized by the National Judicial Institute and other organizations.

Justice Ali-Jos’ career is notable for her steadfast integrity. In 2019, she returned $193,700 handed to her as a bribe during the Katsina Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, highlighting her commitment to the rule of law despite the absence of investigations into the perpetrators.
