*Demands Probe and Justice

The Nigerian Bar Association’s Citizens’ Engagement Committee, led by its Chairman, Kunle Edun, SAN, has strongly condemned the killing of a West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidate in Ibadan by a police officer who allegedly opened fire during a traffic stop.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Committee described the incident as “deeply troubling” and called for an immediate and thorough investigation by both the Oyo State Government and the Nigeria Police Force. The call follows the circulation of a disturbing video on social media showing a policeman firing at a vehicle allegedly violating traffic rules. The vehicle was said to be conveying a student, in full school uniform, to an examination centre when the incident occurred.

According to the Committee, the bullet struck the teenage student, who died at the scene, leaving blood splattered inside the vehicle. “It is tragic and unacceptable that a young student, who committed no crime and was merely being transported to sit for her examination, became the victim of reckless police conduct,” the statement read.

The NBA Citizens’ Engagement Committee questioned the rationale behind a police officer’s decision to discharge a firearm in a populated area without apparent justification. “Why would an armed policeman, funded by taxpayers, shoot indiscriminately in a public space, endangering not just the occupants of the vehicle but also bystanders?” Edun queried.

The Committee emphasized that the use of firearms by security operatives must be guided by the law and professional training, not by impunity or recklessness. It stressed that indiscriminate shooting in public is never justified, particularly in the absence of a clear threat to life or the commission of a serious crime.

“As we await the outcome of the investigation, we reiterate the urgent need for constant training and retraining of police and other security personnel on responsible firearm use, crowd control, and conflict de-escalation,” the statement added.

The Committee vowed to monitor the case closely and urged the relevant authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“The NBA will continue to advocate for justice, the protection of citizens’ rights, and accountability within Nigeria’s law enforcement system,” the statement concluded.
