As Nigerians join the global community to commemorate Workers’ Day, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, has issued a powerful message of solidarity with Nigerian workers, calling for urgent economic justice and structural reforms to improve their conditions.

In a statement titled “Let Justice Work – I Stand With the Nigerian Workers,” Akangbe decried the worsening economic realities facing the average worker, citing inflation, unaffordable rent, unstable fuel prices, and a rapidly devaluing currency as forces eroding the value of workers’ wages.

“In a country where inflation soars unchecked… the worker’s wage doesn’t match the cost of living,” he said. “Even the most recent wage adjustments have been swallowed up by the monstrous tides of inflation and currency devaluation.”

Akangbe emphasized that the economic challenges confronting Nigerian workers are not just policy failures, but justice failures. He urged members of the legal profession not to remain silent in the face of injustice.

“As lawyers, we must not be mute. Our duty is not only in court. We are defenders of justice and the voice of the people,” he stated. “The Nigerian worker needs us now more than ever.”

He called on legal professionals to use every available platform—advocacy, litigation, public commentary—to champion fair wages, safe working conditions, and policies that truly support workers. He also criticized systemic inequalities that keep workers impoverished while the wealthy flourish.

“The worker must not remain at the mercy of a system that prioritises profits over people,” he warned.

Akangbe further urged the Nigerian Bar Association to lead by example, stating that the welfare of young lawyers and other members of the Bar must become a central concern.

“A Bar that champions the cause of workers must not ignore the welfare of its own,” he said.

He concluded his message by framing the call for workers’ rights as a call for justice—the very foundation of the legal profession.

“The fight for workers is a fight for justice—and justice is the heart of our profession. Let this May Day rekindle our collective resolve to stand with Nigerian workers,” Akangbe declared.
