Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kunle Edun, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Francis Fadahunsi, over an alleged public statement calling for the killing of members of the Accord Party and their families.

In a statement titled, “A Call for the Urgent Arrest and Prosecution of Undistinguished Senator Fadahunsi for Calling for the Killing of Accord Party Members,” Edun alleged that the lawmaker recently issued the threat publicly and subsequently admitted making the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
“A Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Fadahunsi from Osun State, recently issued a public threat that Accord Party members and members of their families should be killed. He also admitted issuing the same threat on Channels TV Politics Today programme,” the senior lawyer stated.
Edun expressed concern that neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the State Security Service had taken action against the senator over the alleged “kill them” statement.
“The Nigeria Police is yet to arrest him and charge him to court. The SSS is yet to do anything, or probably it does not see any threat to state security in the ‘kill them’ statement. The National Human Rights Commission is silent. The Federal Government is silent. Would they be silent if an opposition party member had issued a similar threat?” he asked.
The senior advocate also condemned a separate statement allegedly made by an Islamic cleric in northern Nigeria, who reportedly declared that Nigeria belonged to Muslims and that Christians who were uncomfortable with the situation should leave the country.
Edun accused the ruling party of failing to curb what he described as hate speech by some of its supporters, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could deepen divisions and threaten national cohesion.
“In another event held somewhere in the North, an Islamic cleric publicly declared that Nigeria belongs to Muslims and that any Christian who is not comfortable with it should leave the country. The ruling party has not done anything to curtail these hate speeches from its supporters,” he said.
Drawing lessons from the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Edun warned that unchecked hate speech could have devastating consequences. He recalled that hundreds of thousands of people were killed following sustained ethnic incitement between the Hutu and Tutsi communities.
“More than 800,000 Rwandans were murdered in a space of about 100 days as a result of hate speech between the Hutus and Tutsis. While misguided politicians and their ignorant followers are publicly spewing hate speech to divide the citizens, other countries have since left Nigeria behind in terms of growth,” he stated.
Edun further contrasted the alleged inaction against Fadahunsi with the prosecution of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore over statements concerning President Bola Tinubu.
“Sowore called the President a criminal. He is presently facing criminal charges at the Federal High Court, while the senator who allegedly insulted and threatened the lives of millions of Nigerians is still roaming free,” he said.
He insisted that equality before the law required security agencies to investigate and prosecute politically exposed persons where sufficient evidence of an offence existed.
“I demand that the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service arrest Senator Fadahunsi immediately and charge him to court. That is the least an unbiased security agency should do. Nobody is above the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Edun declared.
