*Says Claim Viral ‘Kill Them’ Video Was Doctored Is Shameful

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Jibrin Samuel Okutepa, SAN, has dismissed Senator Francis Fadahunsi’s denial of the “kill them” remark captured in a campaign video, saying the lawmaker should be man enough to own up to what he described as criminally minded murderous incitement rather than claim the footage was doctored.
Okutepa stated this in a post on his X handle, reacting to the senator’s insistence that his words were mistranslated and that the viral video had been altered.
The senior advocate opened with a flat rejection of the denial.
“Some Nigerians can lie. He should be man enough to own up to his criminally minded murderous incitement,” he wrote.
Okutepa said the remark itself is evidence of the condition of the country’s electoral politics.
“The statement he made showed how democracy is bastardised and abused in Nigeria. The will of the people does not matter and does not exist,” he wrote. “The brand of democracy is thuggish coronation of political leadership.”
The senior advocate said that in a country governed by law, the matter would already be before a court rather than in the press.
“If Nigeria operates the rule of law, this dishonest and dishonourable law breaker should have had his days in court,” he wrote.
He then turned to the defence itself. “But here he is saying the video where he spoke eloquently about killings of political opponents was doctored. What a shame.”
The intervention follows a campaign video in which the senator, addressing a crowd during a protest near the Owa Obokun Palace in Ilesa, is reported to have told supporters, in Yoruba, that they should no longer hear anything about the Accord Party in Ilesa, and that from then until election day, on sighting them, they should kill them. He is also reported to have disparaged the opposition party’s branding and to have dared those present to record his remarks and circulate them.
After public backlash and an invitation from the Osun State Police Command, the senator offered a series of explanations: that the expression was political and metaphorical and that he meant supporters should defeat the party at the ballot; that Yoruba does not translate cleanly into English without loss of context; and, in the alternative, that the footage had been altered using artificial intelligence and edited out of context by political opponents.
Speaking after meeting the police, he said: “I had to obey the law to come and see our policemen, to ask them why they are inviting me. We have met, and I told them what I said, not the one manipulated by these mischievous interpreters of Yoruba language.”
He added: “I’m a Yoruba man. I spoke in Yoruba. Yoruba means a lot of many things. We said, come between now and Saturday, election, we will kill them with our vote.” He said the original recording runs to about 38 minutes and that he would consider legal steps after the election against the person he said had misinterpreted it.
Okutepa’s intervention echoes criticism made earlier on Thursday by the journalist and television presenter, Dr Reuben Abati, who described the denial as cowardice.
“He’s not the only one that speaks Yoruba, and he’s not in a position to say his own version, his own translation, is the true translation. We all had it,” Abati said on Arise Television, adding that the words used mean kill. “And now he said he was being misinterpreted. He was quoted out of context. It was AI generated. I didn’t know he was such a coward.”
Abati also asked what remained to be investigated. “Are they going to import an expert from the United States to come and interpret Yoruba, when we have the experts here in the country? So he has no excuse whatsoever.”
