Former Edo State Governor and senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, has endorsed the proposed death penalty for kidnappers and bandits in Edo State, saying drastic measures are needed to tackle insecurity in the state.

Oshiomhole gave the backing while addressing party supporters at the flag-off of the Edo North Senatorial District local government election campaign held at the Public Field in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state. His remarks were contained in a statement issued by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s media aide, Patrick Ebojele.

The former governor said he supported Okpebholo’s position that states, within Nigeria’s federal structure, have the power to make laws prescribing punishment for state offences.

According to him, kidnappers and bandits should face the severest penalty under the law, adding that only criminals had reason to fear the current administration in Edo State.

He said, “Kidnappers and bandits will be punished by death through firing squad.”

Oshiomhole also renewed his support for the creation of state police, saying it would complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force and strengthen the fight against insecurity across the country.

Speaking further, he praised the Okpebholo administration for what he described as the restoration of sanity in Edo State, while also commending ongoing infrastructure projects, including the reconstruction of the historic Jattu Market in Edo North.

Also speaking at the event, Governor Okpebholo said his administration remained committed to the development and welfare of Edo people, noting that the government had embarked on projects in roads, schools, markets and other sectors.

Okpebholo said the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu had increased funds available to state governments, adding that Edo State was using the resources to execute development projects.

He urged APC supporters to mobilise for the party’s candidates in the forthcoming local government election and also work towards delivering strong support for President Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
