Two scholarly works authored by distinguished jurist, legal scholar, and forensic expert, Hon. Justice (Prof.) Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye (Rtd), PhD, FICMC, will be publicly presented on Wednesday, July 2, 2026, at the Conference Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Jabi, Abuja, in an event that will also witness the formal launch of the Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye Educational Foundation for Indigent Students.

The event, scheduled to commence at 2PM prompt, will feature the public presentation of “Electronic Evidence, Second Edition (With Evidence Act, 2011)” and “A Compendium of Cases on Electronic Evidence, Volume II, 2020-2025.”

The Books

Justice Omolaye-Ajileye’s “Electronic Evidence” is widely recognised as one of the pioneering Nigerian texts on the admissibility, authentication, evaluation, and evidential weight of electronically generated materials. Since its first publication, the work has served as an indispensable reference for judges, legal practitioners, investigators, academics, and students navigating the complex and rapidly evolving terrain of digital evidence in Nigerian courts.

The Second Edition, published in 2026, updates and expands the original work to reflect significant developments in technology, statutory amendments including the Evidence Act 2011, and the corresponding evolution in judicial treatment of electronic evidence. The inclusion of the Evidence Act 2011 as a companion text within the second edition provides practitioners with a single-volume resource that pairs the substantive analysis of electronic evidence law with the primary legislation governing its application.

The companion volume, “A Compendium of Cases on Electronic Evidence, Volume II, 2020-2025,” compiles and analyses judicial decisions from the five-year period that have shaped the law relating to electronic evidence in Nigeria. The period covered, 2020 to 2025, encompasses an era of significant judicial activity in the electronic evidence space, driven in part by the accelerated digitalisation of transactions, communications, and record-keeping during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The compendium provides practitioners, judges, and students with a practical tool for accessing the judicial reasoning and principles established by Nigerian courts in specific cases involving electronic evidence, reducing the research burden and enabling more informed advocacy and adjudication.

The Reviewers

Two of Nigeria’s most eminent legal scholars have been selected to review the books. Professor Alex A. Izinyon, OFR, SAN, one of Nigeria’s foremost legal academics and advocates with an outstanding record in legal education, arbitration, forensic advocacy, and jurisprudence, will bring decades of experience at the Bar and in academia to his assessment.

Professor Dakas C.J. Dakas, SAN, who currently serves as Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, will provide perspectives informed by his internationally acclaimed scholarship in constitutional law, governance, public policy, and legal reform. His review is expected to address the evolving role of electronic evidence within contemporary legal systems and the practical implications for Nigeria’s law reform agenda.

The Educational Foundation

The event will simultaneously witness the formal launch of the Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye Educational Foundation for Indigent Students, a charitable initiative established to provide educational support and opportunities for academically promising but financially disadvantaged students.

The foundation is inspired by Justice Omolaye-Ajileye’s lifelong commitment to learning, mentorship, social justice, and human capital development. It seeks to ensure that talented young Nigerians are not denied access to quality education because of financial constraints.

The pairing of scholarly publication with educational philanthropy has been described by observers as “a fitting convergence of scholarship and service,” recognising that knowledge production at its best should create pathways for others, particularly those whose talent exceeds their financial means.

Why Electronic Evidence Matters

The importance of electronic evidence in Nigerian legal proceedings has never been greater. From the EFCC’s reliance on digital financial records in economic crimes prosecutions, to the use of electronic evidence in election petitions, to the growing volume of cybercrime cases, to everyday commercial disputes that turn on the authenticity and admissibility of emails, WhatsApp messages, CCTV footage, biometric data, and electronic transaction records, the law of electronic evidence has moved from a specialist niche to a central component of contemporary Nigerian legal practice.

Justice Omolaye-Ajileye’s contributions through both editions of “Electronic Evidence” and both volumes of the “Compendium of Cases on Electronic Evidence” have provided the Nigerian legal profession with a body of work that bridges the gap between the rapid pace of technological change and the necessarily more deliberate evolution of legal doctrine.
