Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has ordered the immediate recall of 1,000 teachers employed in 2023, following pressure from the State House of Assembly over the dilapidated condition of public schools across the state.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had during its plenary penultimate Thursday, expressed strong displeasure over the state of both primary and secondary schools in Rivers State. While Governor Fubara initially countered the lawmakers on Monday, noting that the decay in public schools did not originate under his administration, he reversed course on Tuesday with a decisive intervention.

The directive was made public in an announcement signed by Sam Ogeh, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

The notice stated: “In fulfillment of his promise to bridge the manpower gap in public schools across Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, has approved the appointment of new teachers across the state. As part of this initiative, His Excellency has directed the revalidation of the 1,000 teachers recruited in 2023.

“All affected teachers are required to report to the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB) for the revalidation exercise. Teachers must present their appointment and posting letters for verification.”
