The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two police officers at the Ajaokuta ASCO Camp, where a corporal allegedly shot his female colleague before turning the weapon on himself.

The incident involved Corporal Amos Yusuf and Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Salisu Oyiza Afusat, the matter was reported at about 11:04 p.m. by the Divisional Police Officer in Ajaokuta.

Preliminary findings, according to the Command, indicated that Yusuf, who was on night duty at the time, allegedly shot Onimisi before shooting himself.

“Preliminary findings indicate that Corporal Amos Yusuf, who was on night duty, shot Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi and thereafter shot himself. Both officers were taken to separate medical facilities, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel,” Afusat said.

She added that the remains of both officers had been deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital.

Police investigators also recovered an AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges from the scene.

The Command said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more detailed investigation.

It stressed that the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the possible motive, had not yet been established.

“The circumstances and motive remain subjects of investigation, and the Command will not speculate on matters yet to be established,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Kankarofi, expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers.

The Command said further information would be released as the investigation progresses and verified facts become available.
