The Federal High Court sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State, has granted bail to Facebook user Fonya Sule after he spent about one month in custody over a social media post concerning Governor Agbu Kefas and his 2027 running mate, Hajiya Zainab Ibrahim, popularly known as Aunty Zee.

The bail followed an application by Sule’s counsel, Pius Danba Pius, who argued that the alleged offence was bailable and that his client remained presumed innocent until proved guilty by a competent court.

Sule had been remanded at the Jalingo Correctional Centre following a criminal complaint filed by the Taraba State Government through the Office of the Attorney-General.

The complaint, filed before an Upper Area Court in Jalingo on September 30, 2026, arose from a Facebook post attributed to Sule concerning Governor Kefas and Hajiya Ibrahim.

Court documents indicated that the post was made on August 12, 2026, and contained remarks directed at Ibrahim, who was described in the proceedings as the All Progressives Congress deputy governorship candidate in Taraba State.

The post read: “Aunty Zee be very careful ooh, if not u will soon carry belle, that your boss na one time BuGu.”

The prosecution alleged that the publication was deliberately made to injure the reputation of Governor Kefas and Ibrahim.

Sule was subsequently arrested and remanded over allegations of criminal defamation and injurious falsehood.

The criminal complaint, marked Suit No. CM/138/28, was filed pursuant to Section 122(A) of the Taraba State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2021.

It was signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, A.D. Mustapha, alongside four other state counsel.

The prosecution alleged that Sule’s Facebook post constituted criminal defamation and injurious falsehood contrary to Sections 392 and 393 of the Penal Code Law, Cap. 98, Laws of Taraba State, 1997.

Following his continued detention, defence counsel Pius approached the Federal High Court seeking his release on bail.

The lawyer argued that the allegations against Sule had not been proved and that continued detention was unnecessary in view of the bailable nature of the offences.

The Federal High Court subsequently granted the application and admitted Sule to bail.

Speaking to journalists at the correctional centre after the ruling, Pius said the court recognised that the charge was bailable and reiterated that his client remained innocent in the eyes of the law until the prosecution proved otherwise.
