The Federal Government has secured 653 convictions in the ongoing third phase of the mass trial of persons accused of terrorism, terrorism financing and related offences across the country.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, disclosed on Friday that 1,060 defendants were brought before the courts during the current phase of the exercise.

According to the AGF, the courts have so far heard 880 cases, resulting in 653 convictions, seven acquittals and the discharge of 27 defendants.

He said proceedings were still ongoing and that the Federal Government would announce the final figures upon the conclusion of the exercise.

Some of those convicted were found guilty of participating in terrorist activities, aiding insurgents or concealing information about terrorist operations from security agencies.

Speaking to journalists after leaving the courtroom, Fagbemi described the current phase as the largest since the Federal Government commenced special court sessions for the prosecution of terrorism-related offences.

He attributed the progress recorded in the proceedings to cooperation from the judiciary, effective prosecution and collaboration among security and justice-sector institutions.

The AGF particularly acknowledged the judges handling the cases and commended Justice Binta Nyako for coordinating aspects of the proceedings on behalf of the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho.

Fagbemi also commended members of the prosecution team, defence lawyers and security agencies for their roles in the conduct of the trials.

Among the institutions he identified were the Office of the National Security Adviser, the State Security Service, the military, the Nigeria Police Force, correctional authorities and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.

According to him, cooperation among the institutions has been central to the prosecution of terrorism, terrorism financing and other related offences.

Addressing the legal representation available to the defendants, Fagbemi said lawyers from the Legal Aid Council were representing suspects who qualified for legal assistance.

He clarified that some defendants were also represented by private legal practitioners.

The AGF said defence lawyers were given opportunities to consult with their clients before proceedings and were granted access to detention facilities to enable them prepare their cases.

He maintained that providing defendants with access to legal representation remained an essential part of ensuring that the proceedings complied with due process and fair-hearing requirements.

Fagbemi also addressed the deradicalisation of suspects recommended by the courts, describing rehabilitation and reintegration as important components of the broader counterterrorism strategy.

According to him, the process is intended to complement criminal prosecution and reduce the risk of individuals returning to extremist activities after completing the appropriate legal and rehabilitation processes.

The mass trials form part of the Federal Government’s continuing prosecution of persons accused of terrorism and related offences, with the current phase involving 1,060 defendants.
