The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has mourned the killing of 10 police officers during a fierce gun battle with suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, assuring that the Force will intensify operations to track down and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The confrontation, which also left two civilians dead and two police officers injured, occurred at about 9:25 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba LGA.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, said the police operatives encountered a heavily armed group of suspected bandits reportedly moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.

According to the Force, 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the gun battle, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed.

The police, however, suffered heavy casualties, losing 10 personnel in the line of duty, while two other officers sustained injuries. Two civilians were also killed during the encounter.

Reacting to the incident, IGP Disu expressed grief over the death of the officers and extended his condolences to their families and loved ones.

He described their deaths as a painful loss to the Nigeria Police Force and the country, stressing that the officers paid the supreme price while carrying out their constitutional duty of protecting lives and property.

The IGP assured the bereaved families that the sacrifices of the fallen officers would not be forgotten and would continue to be honoured by the Force.

Iniedu said the remains of the deceased officers had been evacuated to Birnin Kebbi, while security agencies had brought the affected area under control.

He added that additional security personnel had been deployed to reinforce the area and sustain operations against fleeing members of the criminal group.

The Force also assured the families of the fallen officers and the injured personnel of continued support, while pledging to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Police authorities reiterated their commitment to sustaining operations against banditry, terrorism and other forms of criminality in Kebbi and neighbouring states.

Meanwhile, the Kebbi State Government has pledged to support the families of the 10 police officers and others who lost their lives in the attack.

Governor Nasir Idris gave the assurance when he received a delegation sent to Kebbi by the Inspector-General of Police at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi, on Tuesday.

The delegation was led by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu-Nadada.

Idris condoled with the Nigeria Police Force over the loss of the officers, noting that they had been deployed to the area to support other security agencies in tackling terrorism and other criminal activities.

“I want to condole the IGP and the NPF over the sudden death of these officers. It is our tradition in Kebbi to assist the families of fallen officers who died in the line of duty,” the governor said.

“The Kebbi Government will come to the aid of the families of these officers who paid the supreme price,” he added.

Earlier, Shehu-Nadada, who represented the IGP, conveyed Disu’s condolences to Governor Idris, the people of Kebbi State and the families of the deceased officers.

He assured the state government that the Nigeria Police Force would not relent until those responsible for the attack were apprehended and prosecuted.

“Please be rest assured that we are not going to relent in our efforts. All the attackers will be arrested and brought to book,” he said.

The IGP also commended the Kebbi State Government for its continued support to the police and other security agencies operating in the state.

The police delegation further disclosed that plans were underway to establish a police squadron in Kebbi State as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and improve the Force’s capacity to respond to banditry and other threats in the area.
