The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee has shortlisted 89 applicants for possible conferment of the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria for the year 2026.

The shortlisted applicants, according to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Eniola Akanbi, successfully passed the required stages in the process leading to the conferment exercise.

The LPPC said the applicants were grouped into two categories: advocate and academic.

Out of the 89 shortlisted applicants, 77 were listed under the advocate category, while 12 were shortlisted under the academic category.

According to the committee, the announcement precedes the final interview stage of the conferment process.

The LPPC said the applicants had gone through stages including advocates’ first and second filtration stages, academic pre-qualification, academic second filtration exercise, independent appeals hearing, and law office inspection exercise.

The committee invited the general public to submit comments on the integrity, reputation and competence of the shortlisted applicants.

It stated that every complaint must be accompanied by a verifying affidavit deposed to by the author before a Superior Court of Record in Nigeria or before a Notary Public.

The LPPC added that such complaint must be submitted in 20 copies to the office of the Secretary of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee not later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, or by email to lppcsecretariat@courts.gov.ng.

The committee, however, clarified that the publication of the names of the shortlisted applicants is not an indication that any of them has been successful.

Among the shortlisted applicants are the Director of the Legal Department of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Akponimisingha Osuobeni Ekoi; former spokesperson of the Nigerian Bar Association, Akorede Habeeb Lawal; and Vice President of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Olaide Bamidele Akinseye-George.

The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is conferred on legal practitioners who have distinguished themselves in advocacy or legal scholarship and satisfied the standards prescribed by the LPPC.

The committee is expected to proceed to the final interview stage after receiving public comments and complaints, where applicable.
