The Caretaker Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch, has assured members of the Branch, aspirants and stakeholders that it will ensure a fair, credible and transparent transition process into the next administration.

In a statement issued by the Secretary of the Committee, Auta Nyada, the Committee said it had accepted the responsibility to serve the Abuja Branch with humility, duty and commitment to the unity, stability and progress of the Branch.

The Committee expressed appreciation to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association for finding its members worthy of the assignment, describing the responsibility as a noble one.

According to the statement, the Committee acknowledged the concerns, expectations and interests of members and aspirants, and appealed to all parties to remain calm and patient as the transition process unfolds.

It assured the Abuja Bar that its decisions and actions would be guided by the NBA Uniform Byelaw, fairness, equity, transparency and the overall interest of the Branch.

“At this important moment, we appeal to all aspirants, members, and stakeholders to remain calm and patient,” the statement read.

“We fully appreciate the concerns, expectations, and interests of all parties, and we assure the entire Abuja Bar that the Committee will be guided at all times by the Uniform Byelaw, fairness, equity, transparency, and the overall interest of the Branch.”

However, the development has raised questions among some lawyers within the Branch, who are asking when the Caretaker Committee was appointed, the legal or administrative reason behind the appointment, and the full names of all members of the Committee.

Some members are also seeking clarification on whether the appointment followed the provisions of the NBA Constitution and Uniform Byelaw, especially given the sensitive nature of branch elections and transition processes.

The lawyers argued that, for transparency and confidence in the process, the Branch should be informed of the date of appointment, the authority under which the Committee was constituted, the circumstances that led to the decision, and the complete membership of the Committee.

They maintained that such information would help address speculation, reassure members and strengthen confidence in the Committee’s promised commitment to fairness, equity and due process.

The Committee, in its statement, said no member, aspirant or stakeholder would be treated unfairly, adding that it would approach its assignment with an open mind and a firm commitment to due process.

It further disclosed that it would interface with candidates and the erstwhile Electoral Committee before adopting a position that would promote peace, fairness and an all-inclusive transition process.

The statement added that a clear roadmap for the transition process would be published on or before Monday, June 15, 2026.

The Committee commended members of the Abuja Bar for the patience, support, maturity and professionalism shown so far, while urging them to continue to maintain calm and confidence in the process.

It expressed optimism that, with the cooperation of members, the Branch would navigate the present moment peacefully and strengthen the unity and dignity of the Abuja Bar.

“Together, we shall navigate this moment peacefully and strengthen the unity and dignity of our Branch,” the Committee stated.
