A 26-year-old Ghanaian lawyer, Sarah Araba Tettey, has died after reportedly collapsing while celebrating Ghana’s victory over Panama at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

According to Ghanaian news outlet, Citi Newsroom, the incident occurred on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Standard Hostel, a private hostel in Bomso, near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST.

Tettey, an alumna of the KNUST Faculty of Law, was said to have been watching the match with friends when she suddenly collapsed during post-match celebrations.

Ghana had reportedly secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in its opening World Cup match, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring a stoppage-time winner in the 95th minute.

Following the final whistle, Tettey was said to have joined other supporters in celebrating the victory before she suddenly collapsed.

Friends and bystanders reportedly rushed her to the KNUST Hospital, also known as Tech Hospital, where medical personnel made efforts to revive her.

Despite attempts to save her life, she was later pronounced dead.

Some local reports suggested that she may have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, but the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed by her family or medical authorities.

Tettey was called to the Ghana Bar earlier this year and was practising as a private legal practitioner with O & A Legal Consult.

Her sudden death has triggered an outpouring of grief on social media, with friends, colleagues, former classmates and members of the legal community mourning the loss of a young lawyer many described as brilliant, hardworking, compassionate and full of promise.

As of the time of filing this report, her family had not issued an official statement on the circumstances surrounding her death.

Her body has reportedly been deposited at a mortuary pending further arrangements.
