The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has appointed Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma as its new Vice-Chancellor.

Prof. Uduma took the oath of office on February 11 at the university’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, becoming the sixth Vice-Chancellor of the institution established over two decades ago. Founded during the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo, NOUN operates largely through an online learning system and has a student population of about 200,000, making it one of the largest universities in Nigeria by enrollment.

Speaking on the appointment, the Editor-in-Chief of Africa-China Economy Magazine, Ikenna Emewu, described the development as well-deserved, noting that Uduma’s academic journey reflects years of dedication and steady professional growth.

An indigene of Ebonyi State, Uduma earned his first degree from the University of Calabar and later obtained his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Lagos, where he also began his academic career. He also holds a master’s degree in Law from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Over the course of his career, Uduma has been associated with 11 universities, studying in three and teaching in nine. His academic experience includes stints at the University of Port Harcourt, Ebonyi State University, University of Cape Coast, University of Uyo, Evangel University, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ikwo, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana and Kogi State University.

Within NOUN, he rose through the ranks, serving as Head of Department, Director of Studies, Study Centre Director in Abakaliki, Director of General Studies, Director of Academic Planning, and later, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) before his elevation to the top position.

At his inauguration, Uduma pledged to strengthen the university’s use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), expand access to tertiary education and consolidate NOUN’s position as a hub of academic excellence. He said his administration would focus on improved management systems and enhanced digital infrastructure.

NOUN currently operates 70 study centres nationwide, having expanded significantly since its inception. Uduma expressed commitment to further broadening the institution’s reach and improving connectivity across existing and prospective centres, in line with the growing demand for flexible and technology-driven higher education in Nigeria.
