The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, which screened the nominee and recommended his approval.

President Bola Tinubu had forwarded Justice Oyewole’s name to the Senate last week for confirmation.

Presenting the committee’s report, the Chairman, Senator Adeniyi Ayodele Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central), said the screening exercise was conducted on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

According to him, the committee carefully examined the nominee’s curriculum vitae and other submitted documents, noting that Justice Oyewole responded intelligently and accurately to all questions posed during the screening.

“The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters has scrutinised the curriculum vitae and other documents of the nominee and is satisfied with his competence, integrity and suitability.

“We therefore recommend that the Senate approve the confirmation of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, JCA, for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” Adegbonmire said.

The Senate subsequently approved the nomination through a voice vote when the recommendation was put to the chamber by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In his remarks, Akpabio congratulated Justice Oyewole and prayed for divine wisdom to enable him dispense justice fairly and without regard to status.

“I pray that God grants you the wisdom to do justice to all and sundry, irrespective of status,” he said.

The Senate President also commended President Tinubu for nominating what he described as “a square peg in a square hole,” noting that the absence of controversy surrounding the nomination made it possible for the Senate to unanimously endorse it.

Akpabio expressed hope that through Justice Oyewole and other Justices of the Supreme Court, justice would continue to be served to all Nigerians, including the most vulnerable members of society.
