*As Wike, Ganduje Children Graduate From UK Universities

Nigerians have unearthed an old video of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, condemning the practice of sending children abroad to study certain courses including law, days after his son bagged a Masters degree from King’s College, London.

In the resurfaced video, Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, argued against sending Nigerian students overseas to study courses like Law, English, and Economics, insisting that Nigerian universities have very good faculties in these areas.

“Some of these courses, you don’t need to send them abroad. What we have said in our own case is to say listen, why do you have to send somebody who wants to read English abroad? Why do I want to send somebody who wants to study Economics overseas? Why do I want to send somebody who wants to read Law overseas? When you know we have very good faculties in these areas in Nigerian universities,” Wike stated emphatically in the video.

The video resurfaced following the graduation of Wike’s son, Joaquin, who bagged a Master’s degree in Management and Technology Change at King’s College, London.

Pictures from the graduation ceremony were shared on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

According to the post, the event was attended by the minister’s wife and the mother of the graduand, Justice Eberechi Wike, his other children, as well as some politicians.

This is not the first time a member of Wike’s immediate family has graduated from a UK institution. One of the minister’s sons, Jordan, had graduated with a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Queen Mary University of London in the UK in 2025.

In a related development, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, has celebrated the graduation of his daughter, Fatima, from King’s College London.

Fatima, who is married to Idris Ajimobi, son of the late former Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, graduated from the prestigious UK institution on Thursday.

Ganduje shared the news in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, describing the moment as a proud and memorable occasion for his family.

“Yesterday in London, I had the honour of celebrating my daughter Fatima’s graduation from King’s College London. Her journey has been marked by diligence, grace, and quiet strength,” he wrote.

The former Governor of Kano State also offered prayers for her future endeavours, adding, “As she steps into a new chapter, may Allah guide her path always. Congratulations, Fatima.”

The revelations have sparked widespread criticism from Nigerians on social media, who accused the political elite of hypocrisy and “rubbing it in their faces” while ordinary citizens suffer from the deteriorating state of Nigerian universities and the economic hardship that makes foreign education inaccessible to most families.

Many Nigerians have questioned the credibility of political leaders who publicly advocate for patronage of local institutions while quietly sending their own children to study abroad, highlighting the disconnect between what politicians preach and what they practice.
