The Chairman of Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, Hussaini Aliyu, has confirmed that all 25 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, are Muslims, dismissing claims by US lawmaker Riley Moore suggesting the attack occurred in a Christian area.

Aliyu urged the lawmaker to refrain from making unverified statements that could inflame religious or ethnic tensions, noting that the Maga community, under the Zuru Emirate, has never experienced religious conflict. He questioned why such remarks would portray Nigeria negatively at a time when government efforts are focused on rescuing the girls.

The chairman released the names of the abducted students:

Senior Secondary School 2A: Fatima Sani Zimri, Hafsat Ibrahim, Nana Firdausi Jibril, Masauda Yakubu Romo

Senior Secondary School 2B: Hauwa Saleh, Hauwau Umar Imam

Senior Secondary School 3A & 3B: Salima Garba Umar, Salima Sani Zimri, Amina G. Umar, Rashida Muhammad Dingu, Saliha Umar, Aisha Usman, Jamila Iliyasu, Maryam Illiyasu, Najaatu Abdullahi, Zainab Kolo

Junior Secondary School 3A: Surraya Tukur, Hafsat Umar Yalmo, Maryam Usman, Amina Illiyasu, Ikilima Suleman

Junior Secondary School 2: Khadija Nazifi, Hauwa’u Iliyasu, Hauwa’u Lawali, Ummu Kulsum Abdulkarim

The Monday morning attack claimed the life of the school’s Vice Principal, who reportedly tried to prevent the bandits from abducting the students. Police have deployed a combined tactical team to comb surrounding forests in a bid to rescue the girls.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the attack and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He also postponed scheduled trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, for the 20th G20 Summit and the 7th AU–EU Summit. Tinubu directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to visit Kebbi and meet with affected families on his behalf.
