The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has apologised to the House of Representatives over the recent disrespectful conduct of some board officials toward lawmakers.

Oloyede tendered the apology when he appeared before the House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies to present documents earlier requested by the panel.

The incident followed an October appearance in which JAMB officials led by a director, Mufutau Bello, abruptly staged a walkout during the committee’s scrutiny of the board’s Internally Generated Revenue implementation, evidence of remittances to the Consolidated Revenue Fund and bank statements from 2023 to date.

Bello, who represented the Registrar at the time, had demanded that journalists covering the session leave the room, claiming the documents contained sensitive information. The committee rejected the request, insisting that its proceedings were public and constitutionally empowered to determine how its sessions are conducted.

Bello then instructed his team to leave and walked out of the hearing, drawing strong condemnation from lawmakers.

In his apology on Wednesday, Prof. Oloyede said he had served the country in various capacities and maintained great respect for authorities, particularly the Parliament. He stated that he would never undermine the institution or permit any action that disrespects or ignores its directives. He also confirmed that all requested documents had been submitted.

The committee chairman, Hon. Oboku Oforji, said the investigation stemmed from a House resolution on a motion of urgent public importance adopted on May 15, 2025. He condemned the conduct of the JAMB director at the previous sitting and warned that the committee would not tolerate any form of disrespect from any government agency.

Oforji added that the House was seeking to address challenges experienced during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and had proposed the construction of at least one Computer-Based Testing Centre in each of the 774 local government areas to prevent a repeat of the difficulties faced by candidates.

He explained that the committee would examine JAMB’s implementation of its budget and Internally Generated Revenue from 2023 to date, evidence of remittances to government accounts and the board’s bank statements.

Oforji stressed that the committee’s work was not a witch-hunt and urged all government agencies to cooperate by providing documents, information and participating fully in briefings. He noted that such cooperation was essential for the Parliament to carry out its constitutional oversight responsibilities effectively.
