Ekuma Jeremiah Iziogo, a street trader who went viral in January 2022 for gifting some of his earnings to prisoners inside a prison van, has graduated with a law degree from Ebonyi State University (EBSU).

The act that brought him nationwide admiration occurred while Jerry, as he is popularly known, was selling water to commuters in traffic in Ajah, Lagos. A video shared on Instagram showed him giving over 70% of his sales proceeds to inmates inside a Correctional Service vehicle. The gesture touched the hearts of many Nigerians, who later rallied to support him financially, helping him pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer.

This announcement comes after years of perseverance, having previously explained why he dropped out of university. Speaking in an earlier interview, the 26-year-old recounted that he was a law student at Ebonyi State University but had to leave due to inability to pay school fees.

Before relocating to Lagos, Jeremiah had lived in Port Harcourt, where he hustled through various means, selling cookies, chin-chin, rat poison, and virtually anything he could. After saving enough money, he purchased a JAMB form, gained admission into EBSU, and resumed his law studies. However, financial difficulties forced him to drop out.

“I vowed not to return to Port Harcourt because some of my friends helped me during my matriculation, and others were already calling me a lawyer. Returning would have been shameful, so I decided to come to Lagos instead,” he explained.

Despite the setback, Jeremiah never gave up. He continued hustling in Lagos, and with the support of philanthropists and well-wishers, including Obi Cubana, Hymans, Lush Eby, Winihyc, Rocky Emmy Photography, Daddy Freeze, and hundreds of others, he was able to complete his law degree.

This morning, Jerry shared his achievement on social media, expressing gratitude to everyone who supported him.

“Today, a journey that started with little or no hope of crossing the finish line has come to an amazing end. A raw but naked hope of becoming a lawyer that I had… How the hope crashed and how I started again, even in a bigger and better way, through the invaluable support of the good people of Nigeria… Today, by the grace of God, the final curtain has been drawn, and I’m happy y’all walked this part with me,” he wrote.

Jeremiah’s story, from a struggling student to a street trader giving back to prisoners, and now a law graduate, is a testament to resilience, kindness, and the transformative power of community support.
