A human rights activist and legal practitioner, Chief Barr. Maxwell Opara, has successfully completed his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Medical Law at the University of Abuja, marking a significant milestone in his academic and professional journey.

Announcing the achievement with a heart full of gratitude, Dr. Opara recounted the evolution of his doctoral research, which originally stemmed from his Master’s thesis on terrorism. He revealed that the journey took a new turn during his Ph.D. coursework when his supervisor, Prof. Abugu now Dean of the Faculty of Law urged him to focus instead on medical negligence, an area where his legal practice had provided him with substantial real-world insight.

“At first, I declined,” Opara said, “but he convinced me that the issue of proof of medical negligence was under-researched and had great societal importance. Eventually, I embraced the challenge.”

He described the research process as intense and rigorous, involving numerous seminars and presentations. The culmination came on July 11, 2025, when his external examiner, Prof. M.T. Ladan, praised his work but signaled a thorough defense ahead. “The questions came like American missiles,” Opara quipped, “but I calmed it down and did justice to my work.”

Dr. Opara expressed profound appreciation to his academic mentors, including his supervisor Prof. Abugu, internal examiner Prof. Maiyaki, SAN, and external examiner Prof. Ladan. He also thanked the Faculty of Law PG Coordinator, Dr. Okolocha, and the full panel of examiners—Prof. Ndana, Prof. Waziri, Prof. Benny Daudu, and Prof. Odeleye—for their dedication and critical input throughout the process.

With this academic feat, Dr. Opara now formally adopts the title: Chief Barr. Maxwell Opara, Ph.D.

“To God be the glory!” he concluded.
