The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reactivated the portal of Jamiu Basola, a Civil Engineering graduate from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), after his admission was previously flagged as fake, jeopardising his mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Basola, who graduated in 2024 with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.41, said the controversy began during his final clearance when the university’s Student Affairs Division informed him that his mobilisation was declined due to discrepancies in JAMB’s matriculation records.

“I was advised to verify my details on the JAMB matriculation list, which indicated fake admission,” he said.

Basola recounted several failed attempts to access his JAMB portal and wrote multiple letters to FUTA authorities, including the registrar and vice-chancellor, seeking intervention.

Speaking to newsmen on Monday, Basola confirmed that his JAMB portal had now been restored and his name had appeared on the matriculation list, which is a prerequisite for NYSC mobilisation.

“My portal was locked. But now, I am able to log in and reprint my documents. My name is now on the matriculation list,” he said, adding that he has yet to be officially mobilised for NYSC.

The development was also confirmed by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in a statement issued by its National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Ajasa. He described the outcome as a “significant victory for justice and student welfare.”

“This positive development is a direct result of the decisive intervention by the NANS national leadership, led by President Comrade Olushola Oladoja,” Ajasa stated.

Ajasa acknowledged the efforts of FUTA’s Civil Engineering Department, which wrote to JAMB clarifying Basola’s admission status. He described the resolution as a reflection of NANS’s commitment to protecting Nigerian students and holding institutions accountable.

“Jamiu’s academic dedication was regrettably challenged by a ‘fake admission’ flag after years of diligent study. His fight was our fight, and his victory is a triumph for every Nigerian student,” the statement read.

He assured that NANS would continue to monitor the matter to ensure Basola is included in the next NYSC mobilisation batch.

Basola’s case drew public attention after he posted on social media, revealing that JAMB had invalidated his university admission seven years after it was supposedly granted. JAMB, through its Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin, responded that Basola was “an unknown entity” in its admission system and that the admission letter he held “did not emanate” from its records.

While JAMB initially questioned the authenticity of the documents and demanded explanations, sustained advocacy from student groups and departmental clarifications have now led to the reactivation of Basola’s portal and recognition of his admission.

NANS vowed to ensure that such administrative failings do not recur, stressing that “the lives and academic pursuits of Nigerian students are not bargaining chips.”
