The Association for Orphans and Vulnerable Children NGOs in Nigeria (AONN), FCT Chapter, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to urgently intervene in the ongoing industrial actions that have crippled education and healthcare services across the territory.

The appeal was made during the association’s quarterly meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, where members expressed concern over the prolonged strikes by primary school teachers and healthcare workers, which they say are hurting the most vulnerable members of society.

Teachers under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have been on indefinite strike since March 24, 2025, protesting the non-payment of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage. Meanwhile, primary healthcare workers under the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have been on strike since January 11, 2025, over unpaid arrears and allowances. As a result, services at public schools and health centres in all six area councils—Abaji, Kwali, Kuje, Gwagwalada, Bwari, and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC)—have been paralyzed for months.

While commending Wike for his visible efforts in road and infrastructure development, AONN’s FCT Coordinator, Dr. Kiema Ogunlana, urged the Minister to also focus on human capital, especially as it affects children’s rights and welfare.

“It is disheartening that children in public primary schools have been out of school, while their peers in private schools are concluding the academic session. These disruptions only widen the education gap and affect the quality of future graduates,” Dr. Ogunlana said.

She also urged the striking workers to consider alternative means of pursuing their demands, warning that prolonged industrial actions disproportionately affect poor and vulnerable families.

“Many of these families cannot afford private healthcare, and now they are being forced to seek expensive alternatives. It is the poorest who suffer the most,” she added.

Dr. Ogunlana revealed that AONN plans to embark on an advocacy visit to Minister Wike. “We see him as a father figure and believe he will take decisive action to address these issues.”

Speaking at the event, AONN’s FCT Public Relations Officer, Oyeyemi Pitan, highlighted the importance of the meeting in strengthening child protection systems across the territory. She noted that members also participated in a mental health session focusing on caregiver wellness.

“When we talk about the African child, we often picture neglect. But we at AONN are committed to changing that image through deliberate actions and investments in their futures,” she said.

The association is also preparing for its upcoming Annual General Meeting and commemorative events for the Day of the African Child.
