The Attorney General of Edo State, Samson Osagie, has responded to the controversy surrounding the suspension of all chairmen and vice chairmen of the state’s 18 local government councils by the Edo State House of Assembly.

The assembly passed a resolution suspending the officials for a period of two months following a petition from Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, who accused the chairmen of insubordination and gross misconduct for refusing to submit their financial records to the state government.

Despite criticism from the embattled council officials, who claim the assembly’s actions violated a court ruling, Attorney General Osagie maintained that the assembly has not changed the democratic structures of the local governments. He stated, “What’s clear is that the House has exercised its powers in the constitution according to local government administration.”

Osagie further advised the suspended chairmen, saying, “The chairmen better be advised that there is only one Chief Security Officer in the state, that is the governor.” His statement emphasizes the governor’s authority and the assembly’s constitutional powers in managing local government affairs.

The suspension has sparked a heated debate, with the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) in Edo, led by Newman Ugiagbe, asserting that the officials will remain in office until September 2026 based on a court order.

However, the Attorney General’s response suggests that the state government is standing firm on its decision to suspend the local government chairmen and vice chairmen.
