Prominent banker and business leader Atedo Peterside has raised serious concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, pointing to alleged irregularities in the recent Edo State governorship election.

Speaking on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ on Monday, the founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc and Anap Foundation presented evidence of what he described as suspicious voting patterns that favored a particular political party.

“After reviewing INEC’s IREV platform, I found polling units where one party achieved a 98.5% turnout against an overall average of 22%,” Peterside stated. “More alarming were instances where the votes received by this party exceeded the total number of accredited voters.”

The September 21 election saw APC’s Monday Okpebholo emerge victorious with 291,667 votes, ahead of PDP’s Asue Ighodalo who polled 247,274 votes. The election was marred by widespread reports of vote buying, with civil society organization Yiaga Africa documenting cases of voters being paid between ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 across several local government areas.

Peterside specifically criticized INEC’s role, stating, “We must hold INEC culpable. The data I referenced came directly from their platform.” He further alleged a pattern of result manipulation, describing how uploads to INEC’s portal would mysteriously pause and resume with altered figures when certain parties were underperforming.

The respected businessman compared the Edo polls unfavorably with previous elections, noting, “INEC performed admirably in Osun State, but since the presidential election, we’ve seen concerning patterns emerge.”

This criticism comes amid growing concerns about electoral integrity in Nigeria, with observers warning that such irregularities could further erode public confidence in the electoral process.
