*Heavy security around Senate Building

Against all expectations, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Theophilus Soyombo, on Monday, was missing from the Senate Building, the administrative office in the institution.
Recall that Prof. Soyombo was last Thursday, via a notice signed by Azeez Oladejo, the Registrar and Secretary to Governing Council, announced as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the 58-year-old university.
Earlier, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the VC, was removed from office in a controversial circumstance that had pitched staff unions, alumni association, Committee of Vice-Chancellors and members of the University Senate against the Dr. Wale Babalakin (SAN)-led Governing Council.
However, five days after his appointment in an acting capacity, Prof. Soyombo of the Faculty of Social Sciences had remained in his office as a source said he could work from any part of the campus.
At the basement of the Senate building, plain clothes security men were seen around the premises as they prevented newsmen from gaining access to the information department on the 7th floor.
Efforts by our correspondent for an interview with Acting Vice-Chancellor in his office in the Faculty of Science failed as Phillips Odutola, who identified himself as his assistant, said he was busy.
The promotion, which commenced on January 8 and runs until February 8, 2026, offers five core maritime law books authored by Dr. Emeka Akabogu, SAN, ordinarily valued at N405,000, for just N150,000 — a 63% discount.
