For the better part of last week, residents in Mpape and Maitama, both within the federal capital city and hub of prime properties in the FCT experienced series of tremor many estimated was the initial signs of earthquake. As a result, some residents and property owners were said to have begun planning relocations and where applicable putting their house up for sales. “As I speak to you, there are already three properties up for sales in Mpape alone, and I am looking for buyers for them,” explained Jackson Areola, an estate manager in Abuja. Also, some estate agents in Gwarimpa told our correspondent that they are being inundated with searches by client for possibly available properties in the area for relocation. “I have sealed three deals early this week alone and there are still others that we are in talks”. There are noticeable slump in prices of properties in the affected areas, particularly Maitama, which is home to the most upscale and exotic properties in the FCT. Areola estimate almost a five percent drop in the cost of some properties in the area. For three days, last week, strange events like earth tremors were recorded in some parts of Abuja causing tension and anxiety among residents of possible a earthquake. The incident which occurred last week Wednesday at Mpape and Maitama area of the city led to panic in the city as residents confirmed noticing the vibration. No adverse report, loss of life or property has been recorded so far. Eye witness account said the incident which also occurred at 6: 00 am in Mpape on Wednesday. Another claim of noticing similar occurrence in Kubwa area on Friday which sent shivers down the spine of many people. Stella, a resident of Mpape confirmed the development and said that she heard a loud sound which shook the ground intermittently making her to come to the conclusion that it was an earthquake. Some of the residents affected said that they may relocate to the safer place if this situation continued. Other who spoke said that they initially thought the vibration was as a result of usual quarry activity in the area. But the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in a press statement signed by the Director General, Abass Idris said that the service has been inundated with distress call from the members of the public as a result of the incident. The statement noted that the cause of the shaking may be as a result of seismic movement within the earth which is caused by sudden break along the fault line and subsequently release energy that made ground to shake. The statement added that it may also be caused by the mining activities and blasting of rocks which put stress in the underground rock. The service appealed to the residents to stay calm and not to panic urging them not to stay under power lines. “If you are outdoor find a clear spot away from the building, trees and power line. If you are in a car slow down and drive to a clear place, stay in the car until the shaking stops. “The residents are to note that there is nothing to panic as there is no likelihood of any earthquake disaster in Nigeria as we are not in earthquake zone. Therefore, we are urging residents to calm down and be rest assured that that the abnormal situation will soon stop”, the statement read. Mpape is a densely populated hilly suburb and located few meters from Maitama. This is the first such occurrence that will be recorded in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Similar incident occurred in Daura, Katsina state, the home town of President Muhammadu Buhari hours which caused a major devastating effect in the area. The incident that occurred in Kubwa has created more panic despite the statement of NEMA. A resident forwarded an anonymous message that has been circulating in the area thus: “From what I can see online, earth tremors are getting more in Nigeria and this is a forewarning of larger earthquake activity… volcanic activity is on the Cameroon volcanic line, while the Atlantic fault line extends from the southern Delta area to Zungeru.]]>
