Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the United States, United Kingdom and Canada to consider imposing visa restrictions and other sanctions on Senator Francis Fadahunsi over his alleged threat against members of the Accord Party ahead of the Osun State governorship election.

Adeyanju said he had petitioned the three countries over the senator’s alleged remarks, arguing that political actors who threaten violence against opponents should face consequences beyond Nigeria’s borders.
He spoke on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme while reacting to political developments and rising tension ahead of the governorship election.
According to him, Fadahunsi’s alleged remarks were particularly troubling because, in his view, they amounted to an attempt to encourage attacks against members of the Accord Party.
“Again, that takes me to the unfortunate remarks that we’ve just heard of Senator Fadaunsi, very regrettably threatening that members of the Accord Party be killed,” Adeyanju said.
He added that it was “very clear” to him that the senator was allegedly encouraging attacks against political opponents.
Adeyanju said the petition was aimed at drawing the attention of the United States, United Kingdom and Canada to the alleged remarks and asking them to consider appropriate measures, including visa restrictions.
He argued that the United States had consistently expressed concern about democratic conduct and political violence in Nigeria and should therefore pay attention to threats capable of undermining a peaceful electoral process.
The lawyer also urged all major candidates in the Osun governorship election to openly condemn threats, intimidation and calls for violence against political opponents.
“For a very long time, we’ve not witnessed this level of violence preceding an election,” he said, describing the political atmosphere ahead of the poll as worrying.
Adeyanju’s comments come amid heightened scrutiny of Fadahunsi’s remarks following the circulation of a viral video in which the senator was alleged to have made threatening statements against members of the Accord Party.
The controversy has already attracted the attention of the police, with Fadahunsi summoned to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo over allegations that his statements were threatening, inciting and intimidating.
Fadahunsi has, however, denied advocating violence, insisting that his controversial “kill Accord” remark was political and metaphorical and was intended to mean defeating the party overwhelmingly at the ballot box.
Beyond the controversy surrounding the senator, Adeyanju also assessed the performance of candidates during the Arise Town Hall session on the Osun governorship election.
He said he was unimpressed by the African Democratic Congress candidate, whom he accused of making broad campaign promises without sufficiently explaining how they would be implemented.
Adeyanju, however, praised the combative approach adopted by the All Progressives Congress candidate, saying the opposition candidate appropriately challenged the incumbent governor and raised questions about the management of state resources.
Despite that, he said Governor Ademola Adeleke impressed him the most during the town hall because the governor attempted to account for projects carried out by his administration.
Adeyanju consequently rated the town hall performance “60/40” in favour of Adeleke over the APC candidate.
He also noted that Adeleke raised allegations of infractions by the APC during the session, including claims that the party was interfering with the democratic process, some of which he said had already generated discussion among social media users.
Adeyanju maintained that all political actors must avoid inflammatory rhetoric and violence as the election approaches, stressing that the contest should be determined through the ballot rather than intimidation or attacks on political opponents.
