A Nigerian-American former deputy sheriff, Amarachukwu W. Igwe, has been arrested and charged with attempting to smuggle drugs into a detention facility in Alexandria, Virginia.

Igwe, who served with the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office, was taken into custody on Saturday, April 4, at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center, where she was assigned.

According to authorities, she allegedly attempted to bring narcotics into the facility with the intention of delivering them to an inmate. However, the plan was thwarted before the drugs could reach any prisoner.

Investigators disclosed that the Sheriff’s Office’s internal Investigations, Professionalism and Oversight Section uncovered the alleged scheme and intervened in time to prevent any breach of security within the detention centre.

Following her arrest, Igwe was immediately dismissed from service.

She is now facing multiple charges, including possession of drugs, delivery of drugs to a prisoner, and conspiracy to deliver drugs to a prisoner. Officials further specified that the substance involved is classified as a Schedule III controlled drug.

Igwe, who joined the Sheriff’s Office in July 2025, was described as a relatively new recruit at the time of the incident.

She was subsequently transferred to the Arlington County Detention Facility for processing.

Reacting to the development, Sheriff Sean Casey commended the internal investigative team for their swift action, stressing that the alleged misconduct was intercepted before it could compromise the safety of staff and inmates.

“I have zero tolerance for actions that undermine the security of our facility,” Casey said, adding that any officer who violates public trust will face the full consequences of the law.

Authorities say the case underscores the importance of internal oversight in maintaining the integrity and security of correctional institutions.
