The Nigerian legal community is mourning the death of Mrs. Agatha Obiozo Mbamali, SAN (née Chude), who passed away on September 1, 2026, at the age of 73 after battling cancer for over two years.

Mbamali, who hailed from Umudei in Onitsha, Anambra State, studied law at the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1977. She began her career in 1978 as a Magistrate Grade III in the old Anambra State Judiciary before joining the Federal Ministry of Justice in 1993.

She rose to become Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions and later Director of Civil Litigation and Public Law, a position she held for nearly a decade. During her career, she handled several major cases for the Federal Government and was part of the team that worked with the U.S. Department of Commerce on the Public Procurement Act 2007.

Among the notable cases she handled were A-G, Adamawa State v. A-G, Federation, A-G, Kano State v. A-G, Federation, NNPC v. Famfa Oil Ltd., Ladoja v. INEC II and Ede v. Mba.

In 2011, she was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, with the tribute describing her as the first woman from the public sector to attain the rank.

Her daughter confirmed her death, while burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.

Colleagues described Mbamali as a committed public servant and respected member of the legal profession whose contributions to law, public service and professional development would be greatly missed.
