The Body of States Attorneys-General has intervened in the ongoing crisis within the Nigerian Bar Association, calling for calm and urging all parties to embrace dialogue in the interest of the unity and integrity of the legal profession.

The call was contained in a communique issued after a meeting of the Body of States Attorneys-General on Friday.

The communique was signed by the Chairman of the Body, Dr. Ben Uruchi Odoh, and its Secretary, Ibrahim Sulyman, Esq.

The Body urged all parties to the dispute, members of the legal profession and other stakeholders to refrain from making further public comments capable of escalating the crisis.

It said restraint had become necessary while efforts were being made to resolve the matter through appropriate institutional mechanisms.

The Body expressed support for an amicable resolution of the issues affecting the NBA, noting that the dispute should be handled in a manner that preserves the dignity, unity and institutional integrity of the association.

It also urged all parties to comply with earlier court directives and pursue dialogue rather than actions that may deepen division within the Bar.

According to the communique, the Body called for the urgent convening of an emergency meeting of the General Council of the Bar to facilitate the amicable resolution of the issues giving rise to the present crisis.

The Body noted that the General Council of the Bar is the statutory body established under Section 1(1) of the Legal Practitioners Act, Cap. L11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, with responsibility for the management of the affairs of the Nigerian Bar Association.

It said the emergency meeting would provide an institutional platform for addressing the dispute and restoring confidence in the affairs of the NBA.

The Body reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, the independence of the legal profession and the preservation of the unity and institutional integrity of the Nigerian Bar Association.

It also expressed confidence that the issues in dispute could be resolved through constructive engagement, mutual respect and adherence to the law.

The intervention comes amid heightened tension over recent developments in the NBA, including disagreements relating to the association’s leadership and electoral process.
