President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, to the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa.

The approval was announced in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the upgrade is part of President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening technical education, developing human capital and unlocking Nigeria’s solid minerals potential.

The Presidency said the approval followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District.

Wadada was said to have made a case for the establishment of a specialised institution that would harness Nasarawa State’s comparative advantage in the solid minerals sector and support Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda.

A Senate bill seeking to upgrade the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, to a Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology had earlier been listed as SB 647 and passed first reading in January 2025.

The Presidency said the new specialised university would provide world-class education, research and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing and emerging technologies.

It added that the institution would help produce the skilled workforce needed to drive value addition, technological advancement and sustainable exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources.

“The approval reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to aligning Nigeria’s tertiary education system with national development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda by establishing specialised institutions that address the country’s economic needs and leverage its competitive advantages,” the statement said.

Tinubu also directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, NUC, and other relevant agencies to commence the processes required to implement the conversion in line with applicable laws and regulations.

The President reaffirmed that his administration would continue to invest in education as a strategic tool for economic growth, innovation, job creation and national prosperity.

The approval is expected to strengthen specialised manpower development in the mining and engineering sectors, especially as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to diversify Nigeria’s economy through solid minerals, manufacturing and technology-driven industrialisation.
