Professor Konyin Ajayi has reaffirmed his support for Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, for President of the Nigerian Bar Association, saying her performance at the NBA Presidential Debate demonstrated the competence, integrity, courage and inclusive leadership required to lead the Association.

Ajayi, in a statement posted on his LinkedIn page, said the debate presented Badejo-Okusanya as more than a candidate seeking office, describing her as a leader who believes the Bar should expand opportunities, reward merit rather than privilege and inspire hope among its members.

He recalled publicly declaring his support for the senior advocate days before the debate based on what he described as her experience, vision, integrity and temperament, adding that her performance had further strengthened his conviction.

According to him, Badejo-Okusanya gave a voice to groups within the legal profession that had often felt overlooked, including young lawyers, women and members of smaller NBA branches.

Ajayi said the debate revealed qualities that could not be fully captured in a curriculum vitae, including sound judgment under pressure, authenticity, emotional intelligence and the ability to inspire confidence.

He described her performance as composed and quietly forceful, adding that she demonstrated an understanding that leadership should be founded on service rather than personal ambition.

Ajayi said her closing remarks were particularly moving and reportedly brought some members of the audience to tears because they acknowledged the challenges facing lawyers, offered hope and invited members to embrace a shared future.

He maintained that her message went beyond an appeal for votes and presented a vision of an NBA in which merit triumphs over privilege and every lawyer—young or old, male or female, and from either a large or small branch—could aspire to leadership through dedication, integrity and excellence.

“The legal profession needs a leadership which strengthens institutions, protects the independence of the Bar, defends the rule of law, restores confidence in our profession and inspires the next generation of lawyers to believe that the NBA belongs to all of us,” he stated.

Ajayi said history should not be pursued merely for its own sake, but argued that the profession should not hesitate when history and merit were embodied in the same candidate.

He described the forthcoming election as being about more than choosing the next NBA President, saying it would determine the kind of Bar Nigerian lawyers wished to build.

According to him, the Association needs “a bold Bar” that is inclusive without compromising excellence, speaks courageously because it is led with integrity, and helps shape the future of justice in Nigeria rather than merely reacting to events.

Ajayi consequently urged lawyers to vote thoughtfully, considering not only competence and experience but also the character, courage and servant leadership required to lead the Association.

“I remain convinced that Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, is that leader. That is why my support for her remains unwavering,” he said.

“I wholeheartedly support Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, as the next President of the Nigerian Bar Association.”

Ajayi urged members of the Association to elect a president who would not merely occupy the office but elevate it through inclusive, courageous and integrity-driven leadership.
