Rivers State Commissioners for Education and Housing, Professor Prince Chinedu Mmom and Gift Worlu, have both resigned from Governor Sim Fubara’s government, citing a “toxic” working environment and “smouldering arbitrariness” in decision-making.

In separate resignation letters dated May 15, 2024, the two commissioners expressed their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in the government.

Professor Mmom, a known loyalist of former governor Nyesom Wike, stated in his letter that the “toxic” work environment would make it impossible for him to achieve his set targets for the education sector in the state. He also mentioned a “loss of trust, animosity, and sharp division among colleagues in the same cabinet,” which he described as “unhealthy and very unfortunate.”

Similarly, Gift Worlu, in his resignation letter, cited the “toxic atmosphere” that has characterized the working relationship in the government, particularly the “smouldering arbitrariness of decisions and actions, including the attempt to fuse the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers state.”

Both commissioners thanked Governor Fubara for the opportunity to serve in his administration and wished him well as he continues to lead the state.

Professor Mmom had previously resigned from the Fubara cabinet last year during the heat of the political crisis in the state, before the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

He later returned to the administration as Commissioner for Education but has publicly shown that his loyalty lies with the former Governor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

The resignations of these two key members of the state executive council have raised concerns about the state of affairs in the Rivers State government and the challenges faced by the administration in maintaining a cohesive and effective team.
