REQUIREMENTS FOR A LAWYER TO BE APPOINTED AS A NOTARY PUBLIC FOR NIGERIA.

Notary Public For Nigeria is an office reserved only for fit and proper senior legal practitioners. Such legal practitioners are appointed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and sworn-in by Chief Judges of the states where the legal practitioners practice. A notary performs all the duties of a notary in England and is an officer of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. This includes, certification of documents, taking of affidavits and declaration and administration of oaths.

The requirements for a legal practitioner to be appointed as a Notary Public for Nigeria, are:

1. Three (3) copies of written application on the letterhead of law firm of an applicant, addressed to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
2. Curriculum vitae of an applicant, duly dated and signed on the last page. Applicants from Lagos State are expected to submit twenty three (23) copies while applicants practising in other states, including the Federal Capital Territory, are to submit only fifteen (15) copies.
3. Photocopies of Annual Bar Practising fee receipt for seven (7) consecutive years preceding the date of the applications. Each payment must be fully paid as at when due.
4. Three (3) copies of certificate of Call to Bar.
5. Three (3) copies of certificate of Registration of an applicant’s law firm.
