The Faculty of Law, University of Benin, has named the Criminal Law Section of its faculty library after a legal practitioner, Prince Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession and support for legal education in Nigeria.

The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Bright Bazuaye, disclosed this in a letter addressed to Ahonaruogho, announcing the honour and inviting him to activities lined up in celebration of his 65th birthday.

The letter reads: “In recognition of your superlative contributions to the legal profession, your untiring commitment to the advancement of justice and your enduring support for legal education, the Faculty has resolved to establish a dedicated Criminal Law Section within the Faculty of Law Library, University of Benin.”

Bazuaye described the naming of the library section as “a modest but expressive tribute” to the senior advocate’s legacy, integrity and distinguished service to the legal community.

“We consider this gesture a modest but expressive tribute to your legacy and the inspiration you continue to provide to both the academic community and the legal profession at large,” he said.

The faculty also announced plans to host the Ahonaruogho Moot Court Competition from June 30 to July 2, 2026, at the ACE Jural Court, Faculty of Law, University of Benin.

The competition, according to the faculty, is aimed at promoting excellence in legal reasoning, research, oral and written advocacy, as well as courtroom etiquette among law students across selected universities.

It stated that the event would provide an intellectually stimulating environment for interaction among students, academics, legal practitioners and members of the Bench.

The faculty added that judges of the Edo State High Court would preside over the competition to ensure globally recognised standards of excellence.

Bazuaye said the faculty would be honoured by Ahonaruogho’s presence at both the unveiling of the Criminal Law Section named after him and the moot court competition organised in celebration of his legacy.

He congratulated the senior advocate on his 65th birthday and wished him continued good health and many more years of service to humanity.
